McGee Strike Banishes Ballinasloe
Sunday 6th March 2011. FAI Junior Cup Round 7.
Ballinasloe Town 0-1 St Peters
A 2nd half strike from former Athlone Town front man Noel McGee was enough to send St Peters through to the quarter finals of the 2011 FAI Junior Cup at the expense of Ballinasloe Town.
In much the same fashion as Willow Parks recent win over Crumlin, Peters spent the majority of the first half chasing the ball as Ballinasloe looked to be the better of the 2 teams. Liam Lynch was a constant threat on the ground and in the air but The Hoops managed to hold out to keep it scoreless at the break.
As the 2nd half progressed, Peters tried to step up a gear with a number of attacks. Ballinasloe didn’t sit back though and it took some good defending from Tom Silke and Adrian Carberry to keep the home side at bay.
With the clock running down Noel McGee got the ball and chanced his arm from distance. The Ballinasloe keeper made a full length dive but, in what seemed like slow motion, the ball flew just past his outstretched arm, and nestled into the bottom corner of the net to send Peters through to the Quarter Finals.
