Bluebell United 2-2 Athlone Town

Everyone expects drama in the Cup, especially when drawn against a team from a lower League, however Saturdays drama began before kick off when an entrance fee of €15 was deemed too steep by the traveling Athlone Town fans and so plans to get back on the bus and head for Croke Park to see Westmeath were close to being enacted until the Bluebell turnstile operators finally conceded to lowering the price to €10!

With the crowd finally assembled, the expected drama on the pitch arrived just 8 minutes into the game when Athlone captain Aidan Collins was adjudged to have fouled Bluebell captain Glen Madden, and from the resultant penalty, former Athlone trialist Tony Griffiths blasted home the opening goal to give Bluebell the lead.

After some battling play from both sides, Athlone finally drew level after half an hour when Ian Sweeney got on the end of Lee Dixons low cross to fire the ball past Karl Coleman from 20 yards out.

Athlone took the lead just after the hour mark when Niall Scullion darted down the wing and crossed for Sweeney to volley home from 25 yards out.

Just ten minutes later though, Bluebell were level when a powerful strike from distance by substitute Sean Stewart flew past Paul Skinner to ensure a nervy end to the game.
