Gorman Hat-trick Keeps Pressure On Longford

Friday 28th June 2013. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 3-0 Mervue United

Three goals from Philly Gorman ensured Athlone Town showed no sign of hangover from the mid season break as they sent 10 man Mervue packing while closing the gap to 4 points between them and Midlands rivals Longford Town.

In the sides previous meeting, referee Ray Matthews awarded Athlone a last minute penalty to level the game, and the Galway outfit were forced to relive the agony when the same official awarded a spot kick less than 10 minutes into Fridays encounter after Martin Connelly was adjudged to have clipped Garbhan Coughlans foot as he prepared to shoot on goal. To rub salt into the wounds, the Mervue defender was shown a straight red card, much to the anger of the animated Johnny Glynn on the sidelines.

When the dust settled, up stepped Philly Gorman to give Athlone the lead, sending Conor Gleeson the wrong way from 12 yards.

Despite being a man down, Mervue still battled hard and continued to play football, resisting the temptation to hit to long balls from defense, bypassing the midfield altogether.

In the middle of the park, former Athlone play maker Barry O’Mahony pulled the strings for Mervue, while the always lively Tom King covered so much ground they spectators could be forgiven for forgetting about their numerical disadvantage at times.

Athlone got their much needed, and deserved, second when James O’Brien sent a free kick into the box from the left wing; and as Gorman arched back, he somehow managed to send a looping header over Gleeson for his brace.

In the second half Athlone wrapped things up when Barry Clancy made a darting run down the left wing and sent the ball to the far post where Gorman was waiting to fire past Gleeson from close range for his hat-trick.
