Thurs 25th Feb 2010. Leinster Senior Cup, The Carlisle Grounds.
Bray Wanderers 2-1 Athlone Town

Athlone bowed out of the newly revived Leinster Senior Cup at the first hurdle with a lapse in concentration in the opening 2 minutes and again in the closing 2 minutes allowing Bray to score!

Austin Skelly netted for Athlone when he won and converted a penalty close to the half hour mark but alas despite a number of chances Town couldnt force another.

Who Let The Drogs Out!

Sat 20th Feb 2010
Drogheda united 1-1 Athlone Town

With preseason coming to an end, Athlone travelled to United Park to take on a Drogheda side who managed to creap in through a crack in the Premier Division door. With that, 3 and a half men set off on the trip. Ditching the SatNav we decided to wing it … all was going well until the “short cut” around Mullingar which allowed us to visit mythical places like Fore and Crookedwood! There was a unanimous vote to take the motorway on the way home!

Athlone had a strong side out with Brian McCarthy making his 2nd debut for the Town. Robbie Farrell and newly re-signed Noel McGee battled up front while the midfield quartet of Tom O’Halloran, Gareth Kenna, Kevin Quinn and Richie O’Hanlon put in very good performances. Chris Bennion also performed some heroics. With Drogs having 1 off the bar, another off the post and a shot cleared off the line it wasnt all 1 way traffic with Athlone missing an early peno, O’Hanlon had a shot rebound off the post and numerous other chances falling to the front men. Drogheda eventually went 1 up when a bit of defensive fanning about left Bennion unprotected, but after a raft of substitutions Shane Dolan persevered to capitalise on a goalkeeping error to calmly slot the ball home from the edge of the box.

Athlone Basketball Club 70-80 “The Rock” Ballon

Another shot at basketball but this time I was armed with the 1DMkIII which allowed a relatively high ISO without the level of noise the 40D produced last time.
From my memory of PE in school, basketball was a non contact sport … and judging by Fridays game my memory is a little off. The Ballon team were made up of some fairly big players who had no bother slapping into the Athlone lads … and to their credit the home side gave as good as they got. Some confusion ensued with free’s etc … arising from the apparent lack of English the Ballon team spoke … while the referees and score keepers spoke little or no … erm … whatever Ballon spoke!
In the end Ballon won the physical battle and that allowed them win the game.

Monksland United B 1-2 Clara Town B
Possibly the most embarrassing excuse for refereeing I have ever witnessed … 1 or 2 dodgy decisions are always expected, even at the highest division in CCFL, but the disgrace that Monksland and Clara had to endure in Division 3B was something else … and at the end of it he had the cheek to accept €42 for his “services” … if only you could bring him back and get a refund!!!! More is the pity that the referee accessor had to leave early so he didnt get to see the “display”
