Eleven Not Out As Town Take Youths

October 26, 2013

Friday 30th August 2013. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 1-0 Wexford Youths.

In a scrappy game, Athlone came away with all 3 points against Wexford at Athlone Town Stadium.

The home side were without Paul Skinner, Aidan Collins and Rod Collins Jnr through suspension however strength in depth ensured a strong squad took to the field. Wexford on the other hand were left a little more depleted with CJ Browne and Dean Broaders leaving the club for personal reasons, while Shane Nolan missed out with suspension.

Despite being the weaker side on paper, Wexford caused the more problems early on with Craig Sexton doing well to save from Darragh Walshe and Alan Mulcahy as he got a proper taste of first team action.

Athlone eventually kicked up a gear just before the half hour mark when good work from Neil Harney down the right wing saw the vice-captain send a deep cross to the back post where Philly Gorman powerfully headed home for the only goal of the game.

Even though injury forced Wexford into 3 substitutions, they didn’t let up, with Aidan Keenan coming close on several occasions to scoring the equaliser on his return to the side.

At the other end, Gorman, Enda Curran and James O’Brien all came close but for some good goalkeeping from Graham Doyle.

With the game into the final half hour, further injury reduced Wexford to 10 men, however Athlone failed to capitalise on the numerical advantage as they just about hung on to their lead to extend their unbeaten run to 11 games in a row.
