Athlone Suffer Another Second Half Setback

September 22, 2012 Leave a comment

Friday 21st September 2012. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 0-3 Mervue United.

For the second game in a row, Athlone Town finished a first half scoreless against a team below them in the table, only to slump to a disappointing second half defeat by three goals.

The main difference between this game and last weeks clash with Wexford Youths however was that Athlone could have had the game wrapped up inside the opening 20 minutes had they been more ruthless in front of goal.

With the game just 2 minutes old, Mark Sherlock latched on to Stephen Relihans forward pass, and although the striker steered his shot past Ger Hanley in the Mervue goal, the ball rebounded off the post much to the relief of the visiting defence.

Minutes later it was Mark McGoldrick who almost put the Town ahead but his time Hanley got his angles better and parried the ball away before it was cleared again. As the game drew near the 20 minute mark, McGoldrick again had chances to get his 1st goal of the season but again the Mervue net minder was equal to the efforts.

Before the break, Etanda Nkololo came close to scoring for Mervue however his attempted chip sailed just wide of Pat Jennings near post.

As the second half started, Mervue started to put Athlone under more pressure and could have wrapped things up themselves within 10 minutes of the restart only for Pat Hoban to fluff a chance before Jean Biansumba puta header off target directly in front of goal.

With 20 minutes left, Hoban made up for his earlier miss to head Mervue into the lead. Things went from bad to worse for Athlone as Shane Dunne harshly received his marching orders after getting a second yellow card, before Biansumba also made up for his earlier miss to fire home from close range as the Athlone defence looked in disarray.

With the game in injury time, Hoban netted his second of the night when his well struck half volley right flew in off the post right on the full time whistle to make it 3-0 to Mervue.

The only entertaining part of the second half for Town fans was seeing the 4th official getting an arm full of cup-a-soup when a steward tried to stop the ball flying into the stand only to spill his luke warm beverage over the unsuspecting Ray Matthews.

Second Half Wexican Wave Sinks Athlone

Friday 14th September 2012. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 0-3 Wexford Youths

In front of a meager 120 spectators, Athlone crashed to their 11th defeat of the season after a second half blitz from Wexford Youths saw the Ferrycarrig men earn a 3-0 win to leap frog their hosts in the League table.

Athlone were dealt a blow inside the opening half hour when Stephen Last was forced off with injury. With both sides having chances before the break, neither produced any real threat of note as the half ended level.

Just five minutes after the restart, Youths broke the deadlock when a solo run through the Athlone defence by Aidan Keenan resulted in the midfielder unleashing a powerful drive past Pat Jennings.

While both sides battled hard, neither could break down each others defence until ten minutes from time Youths got the rub of the green when a ball into the box appeared to bounce off Danny Furlong as he spun around. The deflection caught Jennings, and Furlong by the looks of things, by surprise as the ball crossed the line to double Youths advantage.

As the game came to a close Wexford rounded off their second half blitz when substutite Tom Elmes cut in from the right side of the attack to blast the ball into the top corner of the net.

Harps On Song

Saturday 8th September 2012. Airtricity League Division 1
Finn Harps 2-0 Athlone Town

Athlone Town suffered their first defeat under new manager Padraig Moran as Finn Harps ran out 2-0 winners in a disappointing game at Finn Park. With Kevin Williamson unavailable due to work committments, Brian Gill was deployed on the left wing while Stephen Last returned to the defence after a six week lay off with injury.

While neither side created many chances of note in the first half, there was certainly nobody holding back with several crunching tackles going in with the midfield battle. Stephen Last came close to breaking deadlock only for his powerful shot to fly the wrong side of the post. However just before the break Harps capatilised when a weakly struck back pass from Last let Paul McVeigh in on goal. A moment of indecision from Pat Jennings saw the keeper run out, stop and step back and then start to run out again, but McVeigh kept calm and fired home to give Harps the lead.

To say the second half wasn’t pretty would be the understatement of the season, and just after the hour mark Harps doubled their advantage when Kevin McHugh scored from the spot after Mark Harkin was fouled inside the penalty box.

El Classico Is No Problemo For Town U19’s

Sunday 2nd September 2012. League of Ireland U19 League
Longford Town 0-3 Athlone Town

Athlone Town Under 19’s got their season off to a flyer with a comfortable 3-0 win against local rivals Longford Town in Flancare Park.

For the majority of the opening half hour neither goalkeeper was overly exercised, with Longfords chances restricted to a number of shots from distance, well wide of the target. Athlone played the ball around well, with captain Ian Sweeney in the thick of almost all Athlones attacking action, and they were finally rewarded with the opening goal when Eoin McCormack headed home from close range after a mix up in the Longford defence left the front man unmarked at the back post.

Athlone turned the screw 10 minutes later when Jordan Conroy was quickest to react to tap home from close range to double the advantage. As injury time in the 1st half loomed, Athlone effectively ended the tie when a perfectly weighted pass from Sweeney found the on running Conroy who made no mistake to grab his brace with a well taken goal.

In the second half Athlone seemed to take their foot off the gas and while Longford continued to battle hard, some good defending from Ronan Morris and Michael Monaghan meant the home side rarely troubled in the Town goal.

As the game neared an end, substitute Eddy Oyemiyi almost made it 4 when a clearence from Longford keeper rebounded off head only to zip just wide of the post.
