Cup Joy For Candystripes

Sunday 4th Nov 2012. FAI Cup Final
Derry City 3-2aet St Patrick’s Athletic

In a repeat of the 2006 final, Derry City once again lifted the FAI Cup after tough encounter, requiring extra time, against St Patrick’s Athletic.

In front of a relatively small 16,000 crowd, both teams played out a dour first half which did little to excite the crowd of Saints, Candystripes and neutrals in attendance.

Making up for a lifeless start, it took less than ten minutes into the restart for the game to explode when Saints midfielder Sean O’Connor placed a perfectly struck free kick over the wall and to the left of Ger Doherty as the keeper stood rooted to the ground.

The St Pats fans cheering was short lived though when just 2 minutes later Derry were level thanks to Stewart Greacen.

With just over half an hour left to play, Pats keeper Brendan Clarke turned villain when he bundled Stephen McLaughlin to the ground after the Derry man intercepted a poorly hit clearance. Up stepped Rory Patterson, who had been sitting on the bench 10 minutes earlier, to send Clarke the wrong way and give Derry the lead.

With just 3 minutes left on the clock, and the Derry fans getting ready to go wild, Christy Fagan popped up to score a close range equaliser to send the game into extra time, as Derry failed to deal with Ger O’Briens cross into the box.

With tired legs on both sides, as the first period of extra time came to an end, Derry took the lead again when Patterson latched onto a long ball from midfield. With enough left in the tank to get past the Pats defenders, he skipped around the on rushing Clarke to fire the winning goal into the Derry packed North Stand goals.

With time running out, Vinny Faherty came closest to leveling again for Pats but his header flew just wide of the post. With no time to waste for St Pats, Derry keeper Ger Doherty made sure to waste as much as he could, earning a yellow card for his troubles.

As the final whistle blew it was the men from Derry who ran up and down the pitch in ecstasy as St Pats 51 year wait for Cup glory extended to 52.
