Strawberry Delight As Athlone Cruise Past Wexford

Wednesday 19th February 2014. Leinster Senior Cup.
Wexford Youths 1-4 Athlone. Ferrycarrig Park.

Eighteen years after their last competitive game as a Premier Division team, Athlone Town took to the field as a top flight outfit once again on Wednesday evening with a convincing win over Wexford Youths in the 2014 Leinster Senior Cup.

In extremely difficult conditions, thanks to a constant downpour in the not so sunny South East, Athlone took the lead inside the opening ten minutes when a defensive error allowed Sean Brennan cut through from the left wing to latch on to the ball, calmly slotting it under Brandon Callaghan in the Wexford goal.

Athlone found themselves two up inside twenty minutes when Graham Rusk opened his account with a wind assisted shot from the edge of the eighteen yard box that flew over Callaghans outstretched arm and into the top of the net.

Minutes later the wind played a part in Wexfords revival when Danny Furlong sent a looping header from just inside the penalty area, over the back peddling Paul Skinner and into the net.

Furlong came close to drawing the sides level before the break when his delicate flick past the advancing Skinner bounced the wrong side of the post and wide.

Conditions went from bad to worse in the second half, with heavier rain adding to the already howling wind. On the hour mark, and with the wind moving the ball in all directions in the air, Mark Hughes took advantage of some nervous goalkeeping when Callaghan dropped a cross allowing the midfielder tap in from close range to restore a two goal lead.

In the closing twenty minutes James O’Brien wrapped things up for the visitors when the Wexford keeper lost control of the ball outside the area, and with the goals empty he sent an angled shot into the net to make it four.

In the later stages of the game, Athlone were reduced to ten men when Alan Byrne had to leave the field injured after all the allowed substitutions had already been used.

El Clasico Win Sends Athlone 5 Points Clear

Saturday 10th August 2013. Airtricity League Division 1
Longford Town 0-1 Athlone Town

A 33rd minute strike from Barry Clancy gave Athlone Town victory over rivals Longford Town, sending them 5 points clear at the top of the table with seven games remaining.
As the old cliche goes, it was a game of halves, with Longford leaving the field in disbelief of their failure to convert second half chances into goals.
In the first half, Athlone were quickest out of the blocks and knocked the ball around like a team brimming with confidence. Their confidence almost got an instant boost when Mark Hughes looked to have sent a looping shot into the goal but for an acrobatic save from Chris Bennion.
Athlone were dealt a blow mid-way through the half however when captain Aidan Collins came out the wrong side of a challenge and left the field on a stretcher.
Longford came close to capitalising on a defensive mix up when Robbie Clarke toe poked a clearance just as keeper Paul Skinner advanced to collect, however with Skinner in no man’s land, and Clarke scrambling back, home striker Josh O’Hanlon couldn’t steer his effort on target and so crisis was averted.
With Athlone on top overall, the goal finally came in the 33rd minute when Barry Clancy sent a free kick around the Longford wall and into the bottom corner of the net with Bennion at full stretch.
While Athlone had most possession in the first half, it was a role reversal in the second as Longford got themselves into gear after the break.
Derek O’Brien proved a constant threat down the left wing, however his reliance on his right foot saw him constantly break stride to get the ball on his favored foot, allowing the Athlone defense a vital few seconds to block his advances.
With wave after wave of attack, Paul Skinner proved to be the hero of the hour with a string of fine reaction saves to keep a clean sheet and earn Athlone their eleventh win of the season and their ninth game in succession without defeat.

One Goal, Two Referees And Three Points Keep Town On Top

Friday 2nd August 2013. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 1-0 Finn Harps

A debut goal from Enda Curran put clear daylight between first and second after a 1-0 win over Finn Harps put Athlone two points clear of rivals Longford at the top of the table.

Again it was a game where Athlone didn’t play particularly well, but although facing a hard hitting Finn Harps, they battled hard to go into the half time break goalless.

The second half saw the introduction of Conor Fitzgerald as referee, replacing Rhona Daly who didn’t reappear after the break. More importantly for Athlone however, the second half also saw Enda Curran come on to make his Town debut.

After many weeks of “will he, wont he” sign speculation, added to the attention from fellow Midlanders Longford, the Galway man entered the field to rapturous applause from the record attendance.

Just minutes into his debut it looked like Curran would have to go off again when he found himself on the receiving end of Keith Cowans knee, leaving the striker limping with a dead leg.

But his agony turned to ecstasy when, with just 10 minutes left on the clock, Curran linked up well with fellow debutant and former Salthill team mate Graham Kelly to fire low past Ciaran Gallagher for the winning goal.

Skinner Gets A Hand On History, As Town Get Back On Track

Friday 19th July 2013. Airtricity League Division 1.
Athlone Town 1-0 Salthill Devon.

After last weeks stumble against Cobh, and Tuesdays game against Bradford, Athlone got back to winning ways with an unconvincing but vital win over Salthill Devon. The win not only stretched Athlones unbeaten League run to 6 consecutive games, it was also Paul Skinners 5th clean sheet in a row which equaled a Club record set in the 1985/86 season.

While Salthill never looked like threatening Skinners chances of getting in Athlones history book, at the other end it didn’t look likely that the home side would get the all important winner either!

The battle of the game proved to be in midfield, where Mark Hughes and former Athlone player Mixie Harty fought hard against one another in almost every move both sides mustered.

With some frustration showing on both sides, Athlone finally got the break through on the hour mark when top scorer Philly Gorman sent a looping header into the corner of the net from Barry Clancys cross.

With Salthill keeper Ronan Forde leaving the game on a stretcher, Garbhan Coughlan came close to putting one past substitute James Keane but the on-loan striker couldn’t lift the ball enough over the feet advancing net minder to double Towns advantage.
