Skellys Corker Sinks FORAS

Saturday 29th May 2010 – Airtricity League Division 1
Cork City FORAS Co-op 0-1 Athlone Town

A 17th minute bicycle kick from Austin Skelly was enough to surprise many fans (well, me anyway!) and give Athlone Town a victory at Turners Cross.

Every Town player played like their careers depened on it … possibly due to the soon opening transfer window but it had the desired effect. Apart from Skellys acrobatics, Chris Bennion performed heroics between the posts to make sure Town left the Rebel County with all 3 points!

Ireland Account For Algeria

Friday 28th May 2010 – International Friendly
Republic of Ireland 3-0 Algeria

A brace from Robbie Keane, added to a goal, on his first start, from Paul Green ensured Ireland made it 2 from 2 against South Africa bound teams this week.

Ireland dominated a game in which Algeria never really looked like scoring. A brave diving header from Paul Green, taking a boot in the head for his troubles, gave Ireland a 1st half lead. Robbie Keane got Irelands second, lobbing the ball in after a weak clearance before netting his 2nd from the penalty spot.

Greg Cunningham also made his debut and gave a good account of himself.

Willow Pip Peters To The Title

Wednesday 26th May 2010, CCFL Senior Division
Willow Park 1-0 St Peters

Willow Park made it 3 League titles in a row and pipped St Peters at the post for the 2nd year in succession to claim the CCFL Senior Division title.

A first half strike from Mark McConnell was enough to seal the win although it could have all went the other way but for an injury time penalty miss from Brian Cauldwell. The pressure of the game was evident on both side with wreckless tackles flying in when earlier in the season a calm head would have won the ball fair and square. And so the League season ended with Willow claiming the bragging rights for another summer.

Ireland Outplay Paraguay

Tues 25th May 2010 – RDS
Republic of Ireland 2-1 Paraguay

Despite a 2nd half mini rally, 2 first half goals from Ireland were enough to secure victory over World Cup bound Paraguay at the RDS. Although ticket sales were rumoured to be low, over 16,000 turned up to see The Boys In Green and after some impressive displays in the development squad, new boys Cillian Sheridan, Keith Fahey and Paul Green making their senior debuts.

A brave header by Kevin Doyle but the home side 1 up and Liam Lawrence followed up with a cracking strike to seal the win.

The 2 biggest cheers of the evening went to Rocky Santa Cruz when he was taken off and Keith Fahey when the former St Pats star made his debut.

Peters Advance To Cup Final

Thurs 20th May 2010 – Combined Counties Cup Semi Final
Willow Park 1-2 St Peters (AET)

A Showry Harney goal, in the 3rd minute of injury time, sent this local darby cup semi final into extra time, but it was all a bit too much for the Willow lads as Peters somehow found the extra energy to score a winner.
In a real “game of 2 halves”, Peters got off to a flyer and were by far the better side in the 1st half with wave after wave of attack. Then it was Willows turn to run the game in the 2nd half. Despite being on top in the half, Willow conceeded a penalty after some good skill from Paschal Dillon lead to a dubious penalty and Adrian Carberry made no mistake from the spot kick.

Willow kept plugging away, doing almost everything but scoring, right up to the 93rd minute when super sub Michael Harney netted an equaliser to force extra time.

In extra time though it was all about Peters. The Saints own super sub, Brian Caldwell, slotted past Ian Bolger in the 1st period of extra time to put them into a 2-1 lead, a goal that turned out to be the match winner.

And so it ended 2-1 to Peters and a bit of revenge for their Paddy Cotter cup semi final defeat at the hands of Willow earlier int he month!

Sunday 16th May 2010. Westmeath Senior Championship
Garrycastle 2-12 … 1-07 The Downs

A 2nd half rally lead Garrycastle to an 8 point victory over The Downs after a very poor 1st half performance. The referee didnt help either, changing his mind several times in several decisions depending on who shouted loudest. Goals from Alan Daly and Aidan Browne ensured the Castle finished on a high to maintain their 100% tally in this years Championship.
