The Friendly Darby?

With the majority of local games called off due to an overnight freeze, rival sides Gentex and Clonown used the “day off” to combine training sessions and have a friendly game.

Despite taking the lead, Gentex went down on a 3-1 scoreline

On Trial With The Town

Athlone Town held a set of trials today, which included a match. I could only hang around for 40 minutes or so but managed to get a few snaps. Temp was in the 0 to -2 region and there was a thick freezing fog which meant very poor visibility!

Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

Today saw the departure of my starter kit, the Canon 400D, 18-85mm f3.5 and Sigma 70-200mm f4 lenses. Having only used the gear sparingly since purchasing a Canon 40D and Sigma 70-200 f2.8 last year, I took the decision to let it go.

But it wasnt all in vein as a quick trip to Berminghams allowed me to trade it in against a 2nd hand Canon 1D MarkIII which they had just taken in as part of another persons trade in against a MarkIV.

Have to say the lads in Bermighams were sound to deal with … even if one of them is a Shams fan!!!!

The Swedish Rossies!

Sunday 17th January

Had planned on going to McCarthy Park to watch St. Peters take on Clara Town in the CCFL Cup but radio reports said the game was off … so instead I opted for Willow Parks home game. Got there to find the place empty, bar another footy fan who heard the reports of Peters off Willow on!

In the end I tipped over to Tormey Villas where a former team of mine Ericsson Athlone FC were doing battle with Moylough 79 in the Roscommon League.

I later found out that the Peters game was in fact on … but played on the all weather in AIT … which I drove past on my way to and fron Willow!!!

The Land Double Header

Sunday 17th January and the weather finally allowed for some Monksland FC CCFL games to go ahead. Double header down at Cushla with the A Team taking on Edenderry Town while the B had a local darby against Moate Celtic.

The A’s dropped points with a 1-1 draw … dodgy referring played a big part, while the B’s went down on a 4-1 scoreline …

Something New!

With the weather playing havoc with any notions of outdoor sports snapping, I got the opportunity to take pictures for Athlone Basketball Club on Friday 15th January in the newly built Bower gym! Basketball was always a sport that I was unbelievably rubbish at, and so anything basketball related usually went into my “ignore pile” … but a determination to snap something led me to giving it a go.

Not having a hugh interest in the sport, or knowing the rules, made it difficult to judge where potential passes etc were intended so I was flying blind. Having said that it was enjoyable to add it to my list of sports. Using my 40D I had to bump up the ISO to 1600 to get any sort of decent shutter speed … which of course led to somewhat noisey images.

How and ever the gang at the Basketball Club were happy to have some snaps of their convincing victory over League newcomers Tullamore.

Athlone Town Stadium

With the “big freeze” turning everywhere white, I decided to head down to Lissywollen to see how the Stadium held up!

Icy was the answer to any question I had …
