Drogs Unleash Cup Hammering On Athlone

Monday 26th March 2012. EA Sports Cup
Athlone Town 2-5 Drogheda United.

Athlone Town crashed out of the EA Sports Cup at their first hurdle as Drogheda United inflicted a demolishing 5-2 defeat on them in Lissywollen. As obvious as it was that Athlone had no interested in fulfilling the fixture, it was equally obvious the people of Athlone had just as little interest in watching it, with approximately 35 people in the main stand to welcome the teams onto the pitch.

With the crowd rising to, what looked like, 50 people during the game, the majority of noise came from the travelling support… although most of their singing was about Cornation Streets Ken Barlow rather than Drogheda Uniteds football team.

With 8 personnel changes from the starting 11 against Mervue, Val Feeney and Sean Guerins were handed their first starts while Ian Dempsey, Ian Brookes and Warren Conroy made their senior debuts.

With a half an hour gone the tie was well and truly over with Sean Brennan notching up a brace either side of goals from Mark O’Brien and Paul Crowley. Brian Gill got a consolation goal just on the stroke of half time.

In the second half, despite some nice football, Droghedas scoring was limited to a late penalty from former Athlone striker Declan O’Brien. However Mark Sherlock had the final score of the game with a well taken injury time goal to add to Towns first half consolation.

Athlone Scrape By Ten Man Mervue

Friday 23rd March 2012. Airtricity League Division 1
Mervue Utd 0-1 Athlone Town. Fahys Fiels.

Athlone Town recorded their second victory in a row to move towards the upper echelons of the table, albeit it in an unconvincing fashion, with a 1-0 win over Mervue United at Fahys Field.

A combinatiion of poor finishing from Mervues front men, along with some fantastic saves from Athlone keeper Pat Jennings ensured the tie was scoreless going into the half time break. But with Mervue looking the more dangerous of the two sides, Athlone were thrown a life line just before the break when Mervue defender Mike Elwood was shown a red card for an apparent lash out at Garvan Broughall.

As the second half progressed it was hard at times to know which side had the reduced numbers, but with Athlone constantly plugging away they eventually broke the deadlock when Joe Woods curled a pin point shot from 20 yards out over Ronan Forde and into the top corner of the net. It was a good boost for the defender who had been given a torrid time from the lively Etanda Nkololo throughout the match. Had things been different Nkololo could have been in the blue and black as the Congoleese born French forward had two preseason spells in Lissywollen.

With the game closing Town had chances to extend their lead with Mark Sherlock and Noel McGee coming close, but there was no cigar for the forwards as Woods goal proved the only one of the game.

Lights On For The Town 19s

Tuesday 20th March 2012. Dr Tony O’Neill U19 Southern Division
Athlone Town 2-0 Galway United

Athlone Town heaped on Galway Uniteds woes with a 2-0 win in their rescheduled Dr Tony O’Neill Under 19s League game at Lissywollen.
The origonal game fell foul to first a venue change, with the surface in Lissywollen being worked on, and then a mid match flood light failure at Lecarrow, thus forcing an abondonment.

To be fair to both sides, while it was not a spectacle of the beautiful game, they did their best in difficult conditions as flip flops would have been of better use than football boots on a pitch that had more sand than Salthill beach.

Despite both sides wasting chances, Athlone were just strong enough to edge out the bottom side with 2 second half goals.

McGee Brace Knocks Harps Out Of Tune

Friday 16th March 2012. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 2-0 Finn Harps. Athlone Town Stadium.

A second half brace from Athlone Town captain Noel McGee gave Athlone all 3 points in difficult conditions in Lissywollen.

With the pitch resembling more of a mud bath than a football pitch, credit must go to the voulenteers who worked tiresly on the pitch throughout the day to ensure the game could go ahead.

Overall Harps looked the stronger of the two sides in the first half but fortunately for Athlone, new signing Pat Jennings was in top form on his home debut.

In the second half Athlone had a bit more bit about them to put Harps under pressure and with 20 minutes to go their improved play was rewarded when Mark Sherlock burst through the Finn Harps defence and just as everyone though he was going to pull the trigger he squared the ball to the waiting Noel McGee who made no mistake from close range.

Ten minutes later McGee doubled his tally when he beat Ciaran Gallagher with a fantastic free kick from the edge of the area to wrap up all 3 points for Athlone.

First Blood To Longford

Saturday 10th March 2012. Airtricity League Division 1.
Longford Town 2-1 Athlone Town. Flancare Park

Longford Town claimed the bragging rights for the first of four El Classico league meetings with Athlone Town with a 2-1 win on Saturday night in Flancare Park.

Despite the game not being the prettiest of spectacles, both teams were fairly evenly matched and showed improvements on last seasons performances.

Longford took a first half lead just before the break when Daniel Purdy stuck the ball past the outstretched Pat Jennings into the bottom corner of the net. Longfords joy was short lived however when
Athlone drew level on the stroke of half time via a Noel McGee diving header.

On the hour mark former Athlone midfielder Mark Salmon inflicted the killer blow on his old team when he calmly slotted the ball into the net from close range to give Longford the lead again.

In true derby fashion Athlone almost nicked an equaliser right at the death when Noel McGee won a free kick on the edge of the box. The Athlone captain stepped up to take the kick himself and with the ball flying right towards the top corner of the net, Longford keeper Craig Hyland somehow managed to get his hand to the ball to deflect it over the bar and secure all 3 points.

Moate Or Bust For The Garrycastle Elves

Saturday 10th March 2012. Garrycastle GAA

A big Well Done to the Garrycastle Elves who took part in the fundraising car push on Saturday afternoon!

The Elves, some small and some … well … not so small, were out in force to push the “Dans Mobile” from the Garrycastle GAA Clubhouse to Moate.

It took them just under 2 hours (we are still waiting on an official time) to reach Bo Allens where they stopped off for some “light refreshments” and also scooped a prize in the pub draw!
