Monday 27th September 2010. Dr Tony O’Reilly Under 20s League.
Athlone Town 3-0 St Patricks Athletic

3 goals in the second half made up for a fairly eventless first half as Athlone inflicted defeat on St Pats to take the Dublin sides progression to the quarter finals out of their own hands. Daniel O’Reilly, John Mullane and Stephen Relihan were on the scoresheet for Town.

Late Goals Leave Athlone Shel Shocked

Saturday 25th September 2010. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 0-2 Shelbourne

A lack lustre performance from both sides looked destined to end scoreless until a 71st minutes penalty proved to be not only the first goal of the match but the 1st actual shot on target of the game!
Having previously had 2 penalty claims turned down, Shels will feel it was deservedly 3rd time lucky.

Athlones heads were well and truly down when Shels took advantage to double their tally. It was harsh for Town who battled hard up to the peno and also were forced into an early substitition when winger Shane Fitzgerald ripped his leg open against the advertising hoardings and with bone exposed was forced off. Hopefully Shane makes a full and speedy recovery

Towns Twenties Sink Sporting

Thursday16th September 2010. Dr Tony O’Reilly Under 20s League.
Athlone Town 1-0 Sporting Fingal

A first half strike from Daniel O’Reilly was enough to give Athlone all 3 points in a tough encounter in Lissywollen.

Fingal had occupied top spot in the table but were poorer than expected and to be fair Town should have won by more!

John Mullane is dragged back by a, less than sporting, Fingal player

Mons Go Top As Athlone Flop

Monday 13th September 2010. Airtricity League Division 1.
Monaghan United 2-0 Athlone Town

Horrible weather to match a horrible performance from Athlone, where first half brace form Sean Brennan was enough to send Monaghan top of the table (a phrase I never thought I’d say!) and leave Athlone languishing at the bottom of the table*

Indecision was the name of the game for both Monaghan goals as the Town defence spent more time looking at each other than at the ball or opposition.

Unfortunately for the few who travelled to withness the show, Athlone resembled a pub team at times, both performance and attitude wise. The constant bickering, criticising and f-ing and blinding each other out of it showed a real lack of camaraderie among the squad. And that wasn’t all that was missing. The Town seemed to lack discipline, with captain Fabio O’Brien seeing red, confidence, pride, communication, organisation and pretty much everything else that a manager should instil. So take from that what you will.

But as poor as we were, that shouldn’t take away from Mons who looked like a well organised cohesive unit and were definitely deserving of all 3 points.
Photo wise the conditions were shocking and I didn’t have a good day … on the upside, Alfredos in Granard was its usual high standard!

* Out of consideration to Mervue and Salthills infancy to the League, I don’t consider them part of the final table

Second Half Rally Secures Final Spot For The Castle

September 12, 2010 Leave a comment

Sunday 12th September 2010. Cusask Park
Garrycastle 3-12 … 1-13 Killucan
Garrycastle overturned a 5 point deficit at half time to run out winners by 5 points at full time in Sundays second Championship semi final at Cusask Park.

A combination of Killucan coming straight out of the traps from the throw in, and Garrycastle being half asleep, lead to a lot of the crowd thinking an upset was on the cards.

However the half time break done The Castle the world of good at they get back into gear and set about adjusting the scoreline. A goal from Mark McCallon, followed up by an unstoppable shot from Conor Cosgrove gave Garrycastle the advantage they needed to advance to a final meeting against Mullingar Shamrocks

Mullingar Shamrocks advanced to the Westmeath Senior Football final at the expense of The Downs ina hard fought game at Cusask Park.

While The Downs fought hard to keep up with Shamrocks up to half time, they just didnt have enough in the tankto carry it on throught the second half.

Honours Even Between Ericsson And Lawrencetown

Sunday 12th September 2010.Tormey Villas
Ericsson Athlone 1-1 Lawrencetown
“This is the worst game of football I’ve ever seen…” was the comment that greeted me when I landed down for the 2nd half of the Division 3B encounter at Tormey Villas.

Whatever about the first, the second half wasnt all that bad however niggly fouls, from both sides, gave the game a real stop-start-stop-start progression.

Despite being 1 down at the break Ericsson battled hard and got their reward when John McIntyre netted deserved equaliser.

Ian Pillion gets a header in to clear the ball for Ericsson
