Bluebell Top As Athlone Flop

Tuesday 6th June 2013. FAI Cup Replay
Athlone Town 2-3aet Bluebell United

Athlone Town crashed out of the 2013 FAI Cup at the hands of Leinster Senior League side Bluebell United on a 3-2 scoreline after extra time in the 2nd Round reply in Lissywollen. The result was no more than the visitors deserved as they showed more hunger and desire throughout the encounter.

Athlone opened the scoring on 37 minutes when Ian Sweeney finished neatly to take the lead. Bluebell drew level just before the break when former Athlone striker Trevor Molloy found himself all alone at the back post and stabbed the ball into the net with the sole of his boot.

In the second half Molloy put Bluebell ahead when, after receiving the ball, he found himself unmarked with enough time to set up a shot with the outside of the boot that curled past Paul Skinner in the town goal.

With the game drawing closer to full time, substitute Tzee Mustapha sent the game into extra time with a well struck goal, and even better executed cartwheel celebration! However in the first period of extra time Bluebell took the lead again when Peter Darcy beat Skinner with a shot that proved to be the winner on the night.

Late in the game, Bluebell were reduced to 10 men when, after using all their subs, keeper Karl Coleman was forced off injured after a collision with his own centre half Peter Sherlock. Sherlock, the offending defender, stepped up to the plate to take the gloves and with just one effort to deal with he ensured Bluebell went through to Round 3.
