From 3 Points To 1 In 18 Minutes Flat

Sat 26th June 2010 – Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 4-4 Monaghan United
4-0 up … 18 minutes to go … easiest 3 points you’ll ever get. But not for Athlone, nope at 4-0 up the only logical thing to do is to hit the self destruct button and throw away 2 points. Granted the referee played his part in the circus but turning 4-0 into 4-4 cant all be blamed on him.

Although, always one to try and get something positive out of it … Robbie Benson got 2 good goals, Niall Scullion put in a fantastic game and got a goal for his troubles and Gordon Watson finally stuck one away too!

Cant write much more about it without some fantastically vulgar language other than a lot of people will have to have a good think about whether or not they have a future at this level … cos I for one am sick of throwing good money after bad on a weekly basis for this horse shite.

Derry Get Revenge, 15 Years Later

Tues 8th June 2010 – Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 1-3 Derry City

Cast your mind back to 1995 … Derry come to Athlone on the last day of the season, in poll position to win the League. All that stands in their way is the down and out Athlone Town team. Dundalk are a close 2nd and any unlikely slip up could hand them the title. Game kicks off … and Donal Golden scores almost straight away! A heroic performance from Town in a meaningless game for them, a performance which is matched throughout the season would have seen them contend for the title. Derry get a late equaliser but its too little too late and the FAI officials have to drive like theres no tomorrow to get the trophy fom the Midlands to the North East.

Finally, 15 years on, Derry got revenge

Champions Of Leinster

Sunday 6th June 2010 – Leinster Junior Cup Final
Willow Park 2-1 St Pauls Artane.

On Sunday, Willow Park put the icing on the cake of a season by capturinf the Leinster Junior Cup against St Pauls Artane.
Willow took a 1st half lead when Colm Hyland took advantage of the Artane keeper wandering out into no-mans land to send a curling lob over his head and into the net. Despite having the most possession for the opening 35 minutes, St Pauls only really got into gear in the final 10 of the half and started the 2nd hald as they ended the first. They continued to put the pressure on until finally they notched up an equaliser after Ian bolger failed to keep hold of a shot and Graham Sullivan nipped in to score. With the prospect of Extra Time looming, Willow brought on Brian Frawley and Aidan Hyland and it was the former who struck the ball home after some great work from Garry McHugh, to seal the victory and bring the Cup to the Park.

Town Can Concentrate On The League

Friday 4th June 2010, FAI Ford Cup 3rd Round
Sligo Rovers 1-0 Athlone Town

Athlone travelled to free scoring Sligo on Friday night for the 3rd round of the FAI Cup.

Athlone were missing several 1st teamers for the trip but yet kept Sligo at bay until a lapse in concentration at the start of the 2nd half allowed John Dillon to net the only goal of the game.

Athlone had chances too with Richard Brush proving his worth on a number of occassions.

So with the distraction of the Cup over and done with, Town can concentrate on the League!
