Town Open Season With A Draw

Friday 4th March 2011. Airtricity League Divison 1. Waterford RSC.
Waterford United 0-0 Athlone Town

Against all odds, Athlone Town ended series 1 of the Airtricity League Division 1 fixture list with a more than credible point earned away to title hopefuls Waterford United.

Town fans can be forgiven for expecting a walloping due to the delay in appointments, low key pre-season and the unavailability of some players for the season start. To their credit, the players stood up to be counted and battled hard for a share of the spoils.

While in past seasons Town have had the highlight of promoting young players to senior duties, this season started in the same way with U17 players Brian Gill and Alan Coffey making their League debuts. And neither player disappointed either with tireless running for the entire game.

Gary Higgins and Niall Scullion tore into every challenge like men possessed while at the back Paul Dannagher managed to stick his head on almost everything that came in from a height. Credit must also go to goalkeeper Michael Schlingermann who made 2 top class saves to ensure Athlone left the RSC with a point while Waterford left bewildered!
