Town Young Guns Make The Grade Against Students

Monday 7th March 2011. Leinster Senior Cup. Athlone Town Stadium.
Athlone Town 2-1 UCD

A debut goal from Ian Sweeney proved to be the match winner sending Athlone Town through to the Quarter Finals of the Leinster Senior Cup at the expense of UCD.

While the ongoing students/lesson gag raises its head at every game against UCD, it was Athlone who fielded no less than 5 players who are still in secondary school.

Building on Fridays performance, Garry Higgins opened the scoring on the 20 minute mark with a good run at the UCD defense before placing the ball past Mark McGinley.

Town held on well with Michael Schlingermann again making some top saves to keep the college Students at bay.

As the 2nd half went on, UCD piled on the pressure and eventually managed to pull back a goal to level things. But rather than let the heads drop, Town fought hard for every ball and got their reward late on when substitute Ian Sweeney curled the ball perfectly around McGinley to score the winning goal.
