Peters Overpower 9 Man Melville

Wednesday 28th April 2010 – CCFL Senior Division
St Peters 2-1 Melville United
With the midweek local double header fixture list I made the short journey across the Shannon to catch the 2nd half of local derby St Peters v Melville.

Second half started with Melville 1 goal up and 1 man down and with the hard tackles going in I kind of knew there would action like that! Melville looked like they could hold out but the 1 man advantage started to take its toll, and when some refereeing decisions went against them, their heads, like their legs started to drop. Peters equaliser came when Brian Caudwell ran on to a through ball and the advancing Melville keeper Mickey Greene decided to try some fancy footwork instead of using his hands. Greene lost control of the ball and Caulwell pounced. The Peters front man had the ball in the net again but he was adjudged to have strayed off side when latching on to Mark Sherlocks cross.

After a goal mouth scramble the ball popped out and player/manager Mickey Collins let fly with a shot take all 3 points for Peters and put them 2 points ahead of Willow in the table.

Quote of the day was at the final whistle the Melville manager approached the referee to “voice his concerns” over several decisions, a Melville supporters looked over at me and said:

“I hope your getting some good photos of this …
cos they might be used in court next week”
