Garrycastle GAA Club – Leinster Champions
Athlone Advance To Feis Cup Final
Friday 25th November 2011. Feis Cup Semi Final
Garrycastle 2-07 … 2-08 Athlone (AET). Pairc Ciaran.
Athlone GAA Club advanced to the final of the 2011 Feis Cup with the narrowest of wins over nearest neighbours Garrycastle on a cold and wet Friday night in Pairc Ciaran.
With eyes predominantly focused on the upcoming Leinster Semi Final, an expiremental Garrycastle team started the brighter and went into the half time break with a 3 point advantage. The lead was largely helped by the Athlone goalkeeper misjudging Justin McAteers looping shot which dropped just in front of the crossbar and into the net.
As the 2nd half started, Athlone got back into the swing of things to reduce the gap and eventually take the lead when they netted a goal. After more points from both sides John Connellon gave Athlone a boost with another goal only to see it cancelled out as Alan Daly hit the back of the net to draw the game level again before swinging over a point to put Garrycastle into the lead. But with dogged determination Athlone fought back to level the game in the closing minutes.
With heavy legs pounding up and down a heavy pitch the sides matched each other point for point in extra time until Athlone finally pulled ahead in the last minute to win the game by a single point advantage.
Garrycastle Go Through To Final
Sunday 11th September 2011. Westmeath Snr Championship
Garrycastle 2-17…2-8 Tyrrellspass.
Garrycastle booked their place in their 3rd Senior County Final in a row with 9 points to spare over Tyrrellspass at Cusack Park. Paddy Mulvihill gave them a 1st half boost with a well taken goal from play before slotting a penalty home after Conor Cosgrove was taken down as he ran through on goal.
For Tyrrellspass, Martin Flanagan in midfield brought the expected danger but David O’Shaughnessy and Seanie O’Donoghue were more than able to combat him.
Garrycastle Ease Past Maryland
Sunday 14th August 2011. Westmeath Senior Championship.
Maryland 0-09 … Garrycastle 2-13. Moate
First half goals from Patrick Mulvihill and Gary Dolan helped Garrycastle to a comfortable victory over Maryland on a sunny Sunday evening in Moate.
With Garryacstle already through to the knock out stages, and Maryland safe from relegation, the game had the look of going through the motions in parts, although even at that Garrycastle were a giant step ahead for large parts of the game.
Patrick Mulvihill in particular was a constant thorn in the side of the Maryland backline as he moved between the full and half forward line, latching on to long passes with ease.

A Piece Of Cake As Castle Devour Bun
Sunday 24th July 2011. Westmeth senior Championship.
Garrycastle 4-13…1-08 Bunbrosna.
A first half goal from Paddy Mulvihill, followed up by second half goals from James Diugnan, David O’Shaughnessy and James Dolan ensured Garrycastle had a comfortable 14 point win over Bunbrosna on a warm, humid evening in Tang.
Garrycastle could have increased the winning margin had they taken all their point chances in the first half instead of trying for strikes on goal, but luckily on this occassion they wont rue those missed opportunities.
At times Bunbrosna looked like architects of their own downfall with constant bickering among themselves throughout the game. Also, some players persisted in trying pot shots from every and any angle, while giving out to any team mates who tried the same, much to their annoyance.
Garrycastle Earn Bragging Rights
Wednesday 13th July 2011. Westmeath Junior Championship.
Athlone 0-05 … 1-09 Garrycastle. Pairc Ciarain.
A first half goal from Padraig Cosgrove gave Garrycastle a good foundation for a 7 point victory over close neighbours Athlone in Pairc Ciarain. Garrycastle can be thankful for a strong save from Stephen McGuire to parry a goal bound shot over the bar towards the end of the half to keep the home score down to just 3 points.
Athlone started the second half with a burst of energy and were rewarded with 2 points in quick succession from Ray Connellon. But Garrycastle rose to the challenge and the introduction of Eoin Monaghan gave them a boost and caused Athlone problems with every attack.
Par for the course with South Westmeath derbies, there were a number of scuffles, skirmishes and a melee to keep the small crowd entertained.
First Half Goals Topple Tubberclair
Friday 17th June 2011. ACLF Division 1
Garrycastle 3-10 … 0-09 Tubberclair
Goals from Conor Cosgrove, Karl Henson and James Duignan late in the first half ensured Garrycastle emerged as winners over close neighbours Tubberclair in Fridays League encounter.
The scoreline could have been higher on both sides had either sets of forwards been willing to try for scores from distance, but instead they opted for short passing game which looked at times more paniced than planned.
But for Garrycastle, the late rally of goals in the first half made sure Tubberclairs spirited come back in the second half wasnt enough to take the result.
Narrow Win For 14 Man Garrycastle
Sunday 17th April 2011. ACL Division 1
Maryland 1-15 … 2-13 Garrycastle
A depleated Garrycastle team left Drumraney with a victory by the narrowest of margins while also finishing the game with a numerical disadvantage after Karl Henson received a straight red card.
While the phrase a game of two halves is common, the game turned into a game of two halves in the one half with Garrycastle dominiting the opening, while Maryland players bickered among themselves only for a complete role reversal before the half time break.
With Maryland going into the second half a point up, the sides matched each other score for score but for a Paddy Mulvihill penalty to help Garrycastle take the points.
Funniest shout of the day came from the crowd after centre forward Paul Dillon first mis-hit a pass and then appeared to almost run out the gate trying to control the ball, a supporter was overheard casually saying “You know something, I dont think that chap is able to see at all”
Faithful Departed As Lakers Cruise To Semi Finals
Wednesday 9th March 2011. Leinster U21 Championship
Westmeath 0-12 … 0-06 Offaly.
Westmeaths Under 21 team booked a semi final spot against Longford with a 6 point win over Offaly under the lights in Athlone.
Despite playing against the wind in the first half, The Lake County combated the conditions to go into the break 4 points to the good.
The second half was much as the first with the exception of some questionable refereeing but not even that could spare Offaly as Westmeath powered on to win by a 6 point margin.
