Athlone Scrape By Ten Man Mervue

Friday 23rd March 2012. Airtricity League Division 1
Mervue Utd 0-1 Athlone Town. Fahys Fiels.

Athlone Town recorded their second victory in a row to move towards the upper echelons of the table, albeit it in an unconvincing fashion, with a 1-0 win over Mervue United at Fahys Field.

A combinatiion of poor finishing from Mervues front men, along with some fantastic saves from Athlone keeper Pat Jennings ensured the tie was scoreless going into the half time break. But with Mervue looking the more dangerous of the two sides, Athlone were thrown a life line just before the break when Mervue defender Mike Elwood was shown a red card for an apparent lash out at Garvan Broughall.

As the second half progressed it was hard at times to know which side had the reduced numbers, but with Athlone constantly plugging away they eventually broke the deadlock when Joe Woods curled a pin point shot from 20 yards out over Ronan Forde and into the top corner of the net. It was a good boost for the defender who had been given a torrid time from the lively Etanda Nkololo throughout the match. Had things been different Nkololo could have been in the blue and black as the Congoleese born French forward had two preseason spells in Lissywollen.

With the game closing Town had chances to extend their lead with Mark Sherlock and Noel McGee coming close, but there was no cigar for the forwards as Woods goal proved the only one of the game.
