First Blood To Longford

Saturday 10th March 2012. Airtricity League Division 1.
Longford Town 2-1 Athlone Town. Flancare Park

Longford Town claimed the bragging rights for the first of four El Classico league meetings with Athlone Town with a 2-1 win on Saturday night in Flancare Park.

Despite the game not being the prettiest of spectacles, both teams were fairly evenly matched and showed improvements on last seasons performances.

Longford took a first half lead just before the break when Daniel Purdy stuck the ball past the outstretched Pat Jennings into the bottom corner of the net. Longfords joy was short lived however when
Athlone drew level on the stroke of half time via a Noel McGee diving header.

On the hour mark former Athlone midfielder Mark Salmon inflicted the killer blow on his old team when he calmly slotted the ball into the net from close range to give Longford the lead again.

In true derby fashion Athlone almost nicked an equaliser right at the death when Noel McGee won a free kick on the edge of the box. The Athlone captain stepped up to take the kick himself and with the ball flying right towards the top corner of the net, Longford keeper Craig Hyland somehow managed to get his hand to the ball to deflect it over the bar and secure all 3 points.
