Town Geurin Up For A Good Season

Friday 2nd March 2012. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 2-1 SD Galway.

Athlone Town got their 2012 league season off to a winning start as they beat SD Galway 2-1 on a cold March evening in Lissywollen. It was the 2nd time in 3 seasons that Town beat Salthill in a season opener and it sets them up for an early El Classico meeting against Longford on a high.

Despite a stop start preseason due to weather and pitch unavailability, the Athlone players looked to have gelled well and knocked the ball around in a quick passing entertaining way.

Although Athlone had the majority of the play and possession, with Mark Sherlock, Jason Hughes and Ross Kenny all coming close to breaking the deadlock, SD Galway were the 1st to have the ball in the back of the net. Luckily for Town, the strike was ruled out for offside much to the dismay of the Salthill players.

Ten minutes into the second half Town had a perfect chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty. Up stepped Noel McGee who shot to his left. Unfortunately for the striker the Salthill keeper guessed correct to save at full stretch. It was the second penalty miss in 2 games for Athlone, both penalties put to the keepers bottom right corner and both saved.

With Mark Sherlock suffering a knock, new signing Sean Geurin made his Athlone Town debut and with his 1st touch he sent a header past Liam Grant in the SD goal to give Athlone the lead.

With 10 minutes remaining, Tomm Barrett doubled Towns lead when his glancing header eluded everyone to spin into the net.

With the game seemingly wrapped up, Enda Curran gave Salthill a lifeline with a powerful shot from distance leaving Brian Collopy rooted to the ground as the ball flew into the net. The Town netminder made up for it in injury time with a double save in the dying seconds to ensure all 3 points stayed in Lissywollen. The Salthill striker then managed to get himself sent off before the final whistle sounded to draw the opening game to a close.
