Tramore Squeeze Through To Last 16
Sun 15th January 2012. FAI Junior Cup
Willow Park 1-1 Tramore (AET). Tramore win 6-5 on pens.
Tramore booked their place in the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup at the expense of Willow Park, but it took 120 minutes of football, followed by 14 penalty kicks for the Waterford side to go through.
The visitors started the brighter of the sides and took the lead in the 1st half when Robbie Phelan slotted the ball past Paul Bannon in the Willow goal. Willow Park battled hard and were deservedly rewarded with an equaliser before the break when Brian Caldwell headed home from close range.
With the scoring over before half time, the rest of the match turned into a real hard slog for both sides with neither creating any clear cut chances. On the balance a draw would have been the fairest result but with the deadlock remaining after extra time the game had to be decided by the dreaded spot kicks. With Willow having missed 2 penalties, and Tramore 1, right-full Craig Maher stepped up to the plate to fire Tramore into a 7th Round tie against Carndonagh FC of Donegal.
