Garrycastle Make History

Sunday 18th December 2011. Leinster Club Championship Final.
St Brigids 0-10 … 1-08 Garrycastle

Garrycastle GAA Club wrote themselves into the history books on a cold Sunday in Tullamore as they became the first Westmeath club to win the Leinster Club Championship title.
If ever a match deserved the old cliche of “a game of 2 halves”, this was the one. Garrycastle stormed into a 5 point lead at the half time break with Dessie Dolan giving a masterclass in football to the bewildered St Brigids defence.

A second half goal from Gary Dolan looked to have put the tie beyond doubt but St Brigids picked themselves up, dusted themselves down and set off on a comeback trail that knocked the wind out of the Westmeath club. Paddy Andrews was in top form, notching up a tally of 5 points and with seconds left on the clock Gavin McIntyre leveled the score. Extra time looked to be a certainty, but into the 2nd minute of injury time Garrycastle were awarded a free kick out near the sideline. Up stepped Conor Cosgrove and the forward kept a cool head to fire the ball over the bar with the left boot to seal a dramatic and historic victory.
