Spurs Too Hot For Rovers

Thurs 15th December 2011. Europa League

Shamrock Rovers 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur.

Shamrock Rovers season finally came to a close as they bowed out of the Europa League at the group stages.
The Rovers fans started in fine voice singing, to the tune of Johnny Cashs I Want To Go Home, “You Should be In Jail, You Should be In Jail, Harry Redknapp, You Should be In Jail”. Not to be outdone, the travelling Spurs fans replied on the same air with “We Want To Go Home, We Want To Go Home, Dublins A Sh*thole, We Want To Go Home”.

Unfortunately for the home side, things on the pitch were not nearly as evenly matched and a half interested Spurs side cruised to victory on a 4-0 scoreline. Despite flashes of good play from Rovers, their main attacking tactic was to pump the ball high to Karl Sheppard. Unfortunately for the lively Sheppard, standing directly behind him for most of these high balls was the 6ft 3in centre half Younes Kaboul.
Just before the half hour mark, South African international Stephen Pienaar broke the deadlock when his shot from the edge of the box flew past the unsighted Richard Brush and into the bottom right of the net.

As half time loomed, Spurs doubled their lead when Andros Townsend sent a perfectly aimed shot from the wing into the top left corner of Brushes net. The tie was effectively ended on the stroke of half time when Townsend again caused problems for the Rovers defence as he set up Jermaine Defoe to score from close range.

In the second half, Rovers got their only shot of note on target as Billy Dennehys shot kicked up off the ground but was dealt with by Carlo Cudicini. Rovers did have a bit more bite to them in the second half and can feel aggreived with some refereeing decisions. Firstly Karl Sheppard was hauled to the ground on the edge of the box, with a tackle that wouldnt look out of place in Thomond Park, by Jake Livermore. Play on was the call from the Swiss official. With close ot 20 minutes left on the clock Sheppard again was in the thick of it when Younes Kabouol swept the former Galway United players legs from under him inside the penalty area. Play on was once again  the call from the Swiss official.

It just was not going to be Rovers night and Spurs rounded it off in the last minute when substitute Harry Kane tapped the ball in from close range to finish off the nights scoring.
