Town Get Back To Winning Ways

Saturday 3rd September 2011. Airtricity League Division 1
Salthill Devon 1-3 Athlone Town

Despite missing a 1st minute penalty, Athlone Town picked themselves up to inflict a 3-1 defeat on Salthill Devon in Drom.

Town started brightly when Dave Ryan was taken down in the penalty area in the first attack during the opening minute. Robbie Murray stepped up to the plate only for Ronan Burke to guess right and save his spot kick. Ryan was again provider a half an hour later when his cross from the left wing was met by the head of Paul Danaher to give Athlone the lead. Athlone continuted their bright spell and were unlucky not to go 2 up when Garry Higgins shot flew just wide of the post.

In the second half Devon started to get in to the game more and were rewarded just before the hour mark when Ronan Conlon scored after a mix up at the back.
However Salthills joys were short lived when the lively Garry Higgins put right his earlier miss to slot the ball past Bourke to restore towns lead.

Just over ten minutes later Athlone were awarded their second penalty of the game when substitute Eoin Monaghan was hauled down. Tommy Barrett stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to seal Towns first win in five attempts since they defeated Mervue.

Aswell as earning Athlone a second half penalty, Eoin Monaghan was also involved in a bizarre piece of officialdom when the linesman brought it to the attention of the referee that the Town sub was wearing boxershorts of a different colour to Athlones playing shorts. Monaghan was promptly sent to the line to change while trying to convince the ref that they were his actual jocks rather and cycle shorts!

Never a dull moment in the League of Ireland!!!
