Saints Prayers Are Answered

Wednesday 17th August 2011. CCFL Senior Division
St. Peters 4-1 Monksland United

A 15 minute period of confusion was all it took for a new look St Peters side to inflict a demolition on close neighbours Monksland United in Wednesday evenings CCFL tie at McCarthy Park.

With a number of Peters stalwarts having moved on, a lot of the prematch predictions pointed to an away win, however with 20 minutes gone Aidan Ward had other ideas when he gave the home side the lead. It didnt last long though as not more than 2 mniutes later Robbie Connaughton knocked the ball past the advancing Keith Hynes to pull level.

While most though the equaliser would steady the ship what happened next caught everybody, not least the Monksland players by surprise. Ian Coffey was first to capatilise on a moment of indecision from Land keeper Cathal Hannon to put Peters into the lead. A few minutes later the visiting keeper pulled off 2 very good close range saves, only to lay the ball into the path of Davie McHugh who made no mistake from about 12 centimeters out. Still shell shocked from the 2 quick goals, Monksland failed to clear their lines from a right wing cross and the ball popped out to Kevin Boland who stuck the ball away to make it 4-1 before half time.

The second half proved to be a better matched affair and was probably the performance most expected. With both sides having chances, Peters high line and constant playing offside limited the anount of real attacks Monksland could land on goal, while at the other end, the centre half due of James Keegan and Kevin Gaylard managed to halt Peters advances.

But despite 45 minutes of evenly matched play in the second half, it was the 15 minutes of madness in the first that killed off The Land and gave the Saints their first win of the new season.
