Limericks Gamble Pays Off

Saturday 16th July 2011. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 0-1 Limerick FC.

With the opposition teamsheet listing Shaun Maher, John Frost, Joe Gamble and Denis Behan you could be forgiven for thinking Athlone had been catapulted into the Premier Division. However the cash injection to Limerick FC has allowed those players grace Division 1.

Although to be fair, apart from several fouls, Joe Gambles biggest contribution to the game was providing the pun for the headline as the Town midfield kept the former Cork star relatively quiet for the 90 minutes.

Athlone really stepped up to the plate against title hopefuls and although they again created very little chances up front, as a team they did not look at all out of place against the Limerick “Galacticos”, with Wayne Colbert in particular popping up here, there and everywhere to cut out Limerick attacks while trying to set some up for Athlone.

Overall, a draw would have been the fairest result and it looked to be going that way until a moment of misjudgement from Town keeper Brian Collopy gifted Limerick with an open goal and substitute Sean Brosnan made no mistake from close range to keep Limerick in the hunt for promotion.
