Garrycastle Earn Bragging Rights
Wednesday 13th July 2011. Westmeath Junior Championship.
Athlone 0-05 … 1-09 Garrycastle. Pairc Ciarain.
A first half goal from Padraig Cosgrove gave Garrycastle a good foundation for a 7 point victory over close neighbours Athlone in Pairc Ciarain. Garrycastle can be thankful for a strong save from Stephen McGuire to parry a goal bound shot over the bar towards the end of the half to keep the home score down to just 3 points.
Athlone started the second half with a burst of energy and were rewarded with 2 points in quick succession from Ray Connellon. But Garrycastle rose to the challenge and the introduction of Eoin Monaghan gave them a boost and caused Athlone problems with every attack.
Par for the course with South Westmeath derbies, there were a number of scuffles, skirmishes and a melee to keep the small crowd entertained.
