Moate All Whites caused the upset of the day when they battled their way to a 5 point victory over Athlone on Monday evening in Pairc Ciarain.
Although both sides struggled with numbers, Athlone went into the game as favourites and they looked every bit the part in the opening 20 minutes as they appearedmore organised, stronger and quicker to every ball. Ray Connellan fielded every high ball that came his way while Brian Gill created attack after attack from midfield.
Moate were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty and Cian Bradley made no mistake from the spot.
Athlone will feel they didnt have the rub of the green as they saw no less than 4 shots rebound off the post, but Moate followed up with some well taken scores from centre forward Jamie Madden before John Corbally found the net for another goal to help the hard working Moate team to a win.
