Athlone Get Back To Winning Ways

Friday 1st July 2011. Airtricity League Division 1.
Athlone Town 2-0 Wexfrod Youths. Athlone Town Stadium.

Athlone Town recorded their first win in 5 attempts when they notched up a 2-0 win over Wexford Youths in Lissywollen.
The game saw the return of the infamous “Bomb Squad” from previous regiems with no fewer than 4 changes to the starting line up since the defeat at Tolka Park. Newly signed goalkeeper Brian Collopy was promoted to the starting eleven at the expence of Michéal Schlingermann while team captain Kevin Williamson also found himself on the bench. Mark Walsh and Niall Scullion returned from injury while Declan Fallon and Tommy Barrett were unavailable. Mark Sherlock was rewarded for his recent impressive substitute displays with a starting role up front and the former St Peters man put the icing on the cake with a goal on the hour mark to put Athlone in the lead.

Less than 5 minutes later Town doubled their advantage when during a goal mouth scramble, Dave Ryan pulled the ball back out of the 6 yard box to Jason Hughes who made no mistake from close range.

Youths brought on the experienced Greg Yelverton to try and steady the ship but the former Cork and Cobh player seemed intent on doing nothing but kick and elbow the Athlone players during his brief time on the pitch. But it was too little too late as Athlone took a deserved 3 points.
