All Square In El Classico (Part III)

Saturday 18th June 2011. Airtricity League Division 1.
Athlone Town 1-1 Longford Town. Athlone Town Stadium

Athlone Town came from a goal behind to draw level and take their first point of the 2011 El Classico series in Lissywollen on Saturday night.

Athlone were boosted with the availability of all 5 new signings with Conor Kavanagh, Dave Ryan and former players Jason Hughes and Wayne Colbert making the starting lineup with another former player, Mark Sherlock, on the bench.

Longford had an Athlone look to them with 3 former players in their starting line up, with another 3 on the bench and a former coach in the dugout.

While the ball bobbled around midfield for most of the first half, Longford capitalised on a colission between Athlone keeper Michéal Schlingermann and Longford striker Austin Skelly when the ball broke to the unmarked Lee Roache who calmly netted a goal for the visitors.

The second half saw the introduction of Mark Sherlock to bolster to Athlone attack and the former St Peters striker proved to be a thorn in the side of the Longford defence. Athlone stepped up a gear for the second half and got their deserved reward with 15 minutes to go when Noel McGee was left unmarked inside the penalty area, and after Paul Hunt made a save, McGee was on hand to blast home the equaliser.

Athlone could have nicked all 3 points but Stephen Relihans stooping header crashed off the cross bar in the closing stages and so it ended honours even.
