Town Luckless On Leeside
Friday 10th June 2011. Airtricity League Division 1
Cork City 2-0 Athlone Town. Turners Cross
A brace from Graham Cummins, capatilising on defensive errors from Athlone gave Cork City all 3 points in another totally one sided game.
New signings Declan Fallon, Mark Walsh and Noel McGee all made the starting line up while Kevin Dunne made a substitute appearence. Unfortunately for Dunne, his 2011 debut was marked by a misplaced backpass allowing Cummins to pounce and grab his second goal.
For Athlone, Eoin Monaghan put in another impressive performance and seems to be improving with every game. Former Nenagh Celtic player Mark Walsh also put in a good first half, getting stuck into everything.
Town created little or nothing up front though and City keeper Mark McNultys only anxios moment was during a collision with Stephen Mulcahy as they tried to deal with a cross under pressure from Paul Danaher.
To add to Athlones woes, centre half Danaher saw red in the closing stages after he hauled Cummins to the ground, but there wasnt much time left for Cork to capatilise on the numeric advantage and so the game ended 2-0.
