Relaxed Rovers Run Riot
Friday 3rd June 2011. FAI Cup
Shamrock Rovers 4-0 Athlone Town. Tallaght Stadium
Much like Pearse Street in Athlone, this game was all one way traffic as combination of Shamrock Rovers 1st team and reserves inflicted a crushing 4-0 defeat on Athlone Town without ever getting out of first gear.
Athlone are still probably the only League of Ireland side to struggle to field a team due to the upcoming Leaving Cert and with the Under 17’s having played the night before the squad was further depleated.
The only shock for most spectators was that Gary McCabes 12th minute goal was the only score of the 1st half. Rovers doubled their lead straight from the restart when another former Sligo Rovers play, Chris Turner headed home to get the rout back on track. Dean Kelly then came off the bench to score a third goal before Billy Dennehy finished things off after a mix up in the Town defence.
