Mons Too Strong For Town

Saturday 14th May 2011. Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 0-3 Monaghan United.

The Magic Mons rolled into Town for this league encounter and pretty much steam rolled through the home side with a convincing 3-0 win.

Athlone were without the suspended duo of Paul Danaher and Niall Scullion while Garry Higgins and Brendan Daly were unavailable. Town were struck another injury blow with Ronan Stack receiving a nasty facial injury during the first half.

But that cannot take away from Monaghans win as they were well worth all three points. As is customary for all ex Athlone Town players, Declan O’Brien popped up to score against his former side with a goal in between Ryan Brennans brace. At the other end of the pitch, Mons keeper Gabby Sava could have spent probably 80 of the 90 minutes sipping tea and shooting the breeze in the dugout as he remained untroubled throught the game.

The fickle nature of the footballing public was again on show in Lissywollen. Two weeks after there was a real buzz around the Town, with Athlone notching up three wins on the bounce … a defeat and week off later the crowd dwindled down to what looked like an all time low.
With five minutes to kick off there were approximately 70 spectators at the game … and 20-30 of those were part of the travelling Mons contingient!

Credit to the Mons fans though on their fantastic rendition of the Sesame Street Manah Manah song …
