Diego & Co Too Strong For Kellys Heros
Tuesday 29th March 2011. International Friendly.
Republic of Ireland 2-3 Uruguay.
An experimental Ireland side, captained by Stephen Kelly, took on an experienced Uruguay side in an entertaining International friendly at Lansdowne Road. To their credit, the visitors fielded 8 of their World Cup 2010 line up and they sprang into an early lead when Diego Forlan set up captain Diego Lugano to score from close range. Shane Long pulled back an equaliser before Edinson Cavani and Abel Hernandaz ensured Uruguay finished the half with a 2 goal advantage.
For Ireland, Liam Lawrence gave a decent account of himself, proving to be one of the few Irish wingers able to cross the ball, while Shane Long played himself into contention for many more starting line ups.
Irelands battling was rewarded when James McCarthy was foulded inside the box and Keith Fahy made no mistake from the spot.
