Town Maintain Unbeaten Run
Friday 24th March 2011. Airtricity League
Athlone Town 0-0 Cork City.
Athlone Town maintained their unbeaten Division One run as they finally played the first home League game of the season, earning a 0-0 draw with Cork.
The result will have surprised many who expected the strong Cork side to inflict a hammering on the relatively young Athlone team, but once again determination and dogged defending frustrated the opposition. The centre half pairing of Tommy Barrett and Paul Danaher steadied the ship while Joe Woods and stand in captain Niall Scullion kept the Cork wingers on a short leash.
In midfield Brendan Daly gave a decent account of himself while Robbie Murray ran himself ragged up front.
The unavailability of Garry Higgins through injury was an undoubted blow to the light attack but while the goals have not come as plentiful as fans would like, at the other end things have tightened up immensely with the stats showing Athlone having joint best defensive record along with Cork at this early stage.
