Spot Kicks Settle Schools Senior Final

Tuesday 22nd March 2011. FAI Schools Senior Cup Final
St Patrick’s College (Cavan) 0-0aet De La Salle (Waterford). Tolka Park
De La Salle win 8-7 on penalties.

The 2011 FAI Schools Cup final was decided on spot kicks after St Pat’s and De La Salle failed to produce a goal in 120 minutes of play at Tolka Park.

De La Salle started the brighter of the two teams and with nervousness creeping into St Pats game it took the Cavan side a long time to settle on the ball. To their credit though, Pats managed to frustrate De La Salle with goalkeeper Joe Masterson proving his worth on a number of occasions.

As the game progressed, neither side looked to have the killer instinct although St Pats came close but alas Craig Murphys acrobatic effort hit the side netting.

Goal-less at full time and goal-less after extra time it came down to the dreaded penalty shootout to decide the outcome. After 7 successful kicks each, Dara McVeety stepped up to the plate only to have his kick saved by Peter White. It was unlucky on the Cavan forward as during play he spearheaded almost every attack.

And so the Cup went to the Deise for the first time!

Credit must go to the large crowd of support from St Patrick’s College who ensured a fantastic atmosphere for the entire game.
