Mullingar Phone In a Victory Over Ericsson

Sunday 13th March 2011. CCFL Division 3 Shield.
Ericsson Athlone 2-3 Mullingar Town. Tormey Villas.

Ericsson Athlone crashed out of the CCFL Division 3 Shield on a 3-2 scoreline on a miserable morning at Tormey Villas.

Mullingar, who normally play in the Saturday League found it hard to muster up a squad for the Sunday knockout, and ended up traveling with only 11 players. Ericsson, on the other hand, boasted a squad of 17 for the game. Pre-match predictions were well in favor of the home side, especially when the Mullingar Manager/Coach/Physio announced to his players that if any of them go down injured, make sure it was near to where he was standing as he wasn’t able for running across the pitch.

After countless attacks Ericsson finally took the lead via a well taken goal from Conor Harrington. But goals from Martin Nevin and Thomas McDonagh on the double put Mullingar into a 3-1 lead. Ericsson could have pulled it level before the break but Ronan Keogh blasted over while John McIntyre had a close range header ruled out for off-side.

Even in the 2nd half Ericsson could have pushed the game to extra time but for a penalty miss, before John Hannon pulled one back for the home side.
