Derby Delight For Willow

Sunday 13th March 2011. CCFL Senior Division.
Willow Park 2-1 Monksland United. Willow Park.

With St Peters game called off due to waterlogged McCarthy Park, Willow Park leapfrogged the title challengers thanks to a 2-1 derby day win against Monksland United.

Although Willow did not seem overly interested in the game, they took a 1st half lead when Aidan Hyland sent a looping header over the outstretched arm of Oisin Stronge and into the top corner of the net.

Willow doubled their lead in the 2nd half when they were awarded a penalty after Ian Lacey fouled Aidan Hyland in the area. The foul earned the Monksland man a 2nd yellow card and a dismissal.
Colm Hyland made no mistake from the spot but was forced to take the kick again due to players entering the 18 yard box before the ball was struck. Hyland composed himself and netted again.

Kevin Brennan took advantage of the Willow players drifting off asleep to fire a powerful long range shot into the top corner but it wasn’t enough to earn a share of the points. Unfortunately I didn’t get photo evidence of the strike as there was another game taking place on the pitch beside the seniors and an untimely referees whistle on that pitch fooled my into thinking play had stopped!
