Town Young Guns Advance In The Cup
Sunday 20th February. Leinster Youths Cup 4th Round. Athlone Town Stadium.
Athlone Town 3-2 Malahide United
A 1st half brace from Robbie Murray, followed up by a 2nd half goal from Ian Sweeney gave Athlone Town U17’s safe passage through to the next round of the Leinster Youths Cup at the expense of Malahide United U18’s.
Despite going a goal down to the DDSL Youths Super Division side, the Town young guns rose to the challenge to go into the break 2-1 up with some good work from Brian Gill in midfield adding to 2 well taken goals from Robbie Murray.
In the 2nd half Athlone kept the pressure on and got their reward when Ian Sweeney netted from close range. Malahide were then reduced to 10 men after a culmination of late tackles, and dissent led to substitute Matt Jackson seeing red not long after entering the fray.
Although their numbers were reduced, the Malahide players worked hard for each other and ensured a nervous end to the game when they pulled the score back to 3-2.
But the Town held on for a hard earned, but well deserved win.
