Garrycastle Junior B – The Comeback Kings
Sunday 16th January 2011. Westmeath 2010 Junior B Chp Final.
Ballynacargy 1-14 … 3-9 Garrycastle
After something like 9 cancellations due to adverse weather condtions, Garrycastle and Ballynacargy finally got to do battle in the 2010 Westmeath Junior B Champtionship final on Sunday 16th January 2011.
For the entire 1st half it looked like Ballynacargy had spend those 9 weeks preparing for it while Garrycastle struggled to get out of neutral gear … and when they did, they went into reverse! With 15 minutes or so gone, the Castle were down 5pts to no score and although the finally got off the mark they ended the half with a deficit that would have made any neutral spectator head off home.
But the half time team talk done the trick and the troops rallyed with Sean Brennan starting the revival with a side footed goal from close range. Not to be outdone, Conor Cosgrove netted another and at full time the side were all square.
Extra time started and although Garrycastle seemed to have all the possission they struggled to score, and when they did Ballynacarrgy pulled level. However as the final minute was ticking away Kevin Hogan was fouled as he ran through on goal and from the resulting free kick Noel Galvin made no mistake to make Garrycastle winners by just 1 point.
