Westmeath Byrne The Dubs

Tuesday 11th January 2011. O’Byrne Cup. Lakeland Park, Mullingar.
Westmeath 0-12 … 1-08 Dublin

Westmeath booked an O’Byrne Cup Quarter Final showdown with DIT as they beat Dublin by the narrowest of margins at Lakepoint Park.

With the original game postponed just 30 minutes before throw-in due to a frozen pitch, aggrieved Dublin fans made the 2nd trek to the Midlands in 3 days but, as with the 1st trip, left in disappointment.

Despite Dublin scoring an early goal, Westmeath kicked themselves into a 6 points lead at the break as they heavy downpour of rain soaked players and supporters alike. Dublins revival started as the 2nd half began and in the final minute they deservedly drew level.

Extra time loomed until, in the final moments of injury time, Westmeath were awarded a close range free kick and Paul Greville made no mistake to send the ball over the bar and send Westmeath through to the next round.
