Willow Advance In Leinster Senior Cup

Sunday 9th January 2011. Leinster Senior Cup. Willow Park.
Willow Park 3-1 Newbridge Town

A brace from Aidan Hyland and a rocket shot from Colin Fortune were enough to send Willow Park through to the next round of the Leinster Senior Cup, at the expense of Newbridge Town.

The game almost didn’t go ahead at all with Newbridge manager Keith Kearney, staying glued to referee Tony Ward during the inspection, advising against playing the match on health and safety grounds. A decision to postpone would have resulted in a midweek reschedule in Newbridge.

However, much to the disappointment of the visitors, the officials ruled the game go ahead, using the logic if the pitch is not unplayable … then it must be playable!

And so the game went ahead and Willow sprang into a lead when Aidan Hyland scored from close range. Newbridge pulled level just before the break via Sean Francis.

The 2nd half was much as the 1st with Willow again having most of the play, and they eventually got their reward when Hyland again headed home from close range before Colin Fortune nearly burst the net with a rocket shot.

And with that Willow go into the next round of the Cup on a comfortable 3-1 scoreline, but overall they could and probably should have bagged 2 or 3 more.
