Late Late Show Sees Willow Advance

Sunday 12th December. Leinster Junior Cup Round 4
Willow Park 3-2 Evergreen (AET)

Willow Park left it until the 2nd half of extra time to continue their defence of the Leinster FA Junior Cup on a bitterly cold day in the Midlands. With kick-off scheduled for 1.30pm the referee delayed the start by 15 minutes to see if conditions improved. Not exactly enough time for a heat wave but it seemed to do the trick and the game went ahead.

With neither side having played a competitve game since “The Big Freeze” it was a nervous opening few minutes but Evergreen were more composed and went into the lead inside 10 minutes. Another mistake let Evergreen in again to make it 2-0 at the break.

Whatever was said at the half time team talk certainly made the defending champions stand up to be counted and they began the comeback when Jimmy Mullally stuck the ball in the net after some great work from Colin Fortune. Not content with being provider, Fortune blasted home the equaliser to send the game into extra time.

The Evergreen legs began to tire and having played around 25 minutes with 10 men, extra time was a bridge too far as Colm Hyland put the Evergreen defenders under enough pressure to force an own goal late in the 2nd half of extra time.
