A Draw In Drom
Saturday 14th August 2010. Airtricity League Division 1.
Salthill Devon 1-1 Athlone Town
A goal from Andy Haran, just 1 minute into his Athlone Town debut, was enough to give Town a share of the spoils and save some, but not all, embarrassment for the Midlanders.
New signing Haran came off the bench at half time to head home from close range after Brian McCarthy sent his own header across the goal mouth to the back post where the young Dubliner was ready to pounce.
Amid cries of We “SHOULD” have scored 5 and We “COULD” have scored 6 … the crux of the problem is We “ONLY” scored 1!
Jason Hughes put in another good performance while Declan “Fabio” O’Brien finally made his Athlone Town debut, earning the captains armband for the day at the expense of Paddy Collins who was dropped to the bench. This makes Fabio the 5th captain of the campaign so far!
The only other points of note were Wayne Colbert having to ask David Breen what was the name of the new lad up front (Andy Haran) and also the Salthill PA announcer who, when calling out the teams, made reference to Brian McCarthy being the only local in the Town line up … and having a Cork accent at that!
So as far as I’m concerned, a 1-1 result leaves Town firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. In respect to Salthill and Mervues infancy to the League I do not consider them part of the final table yet!
