Athlone Get Flushed Down The Jacks

Friday 6th August 2010. Airtricity League Division 1.
Limerick FC 3-2 Athlone Town

Trips to Jackman Park are rarely a joyous occassion, and yesterday was no different as Athlone failed to capitalise on a half time lead and ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline.

Town looked like they came to the Jacks for a point, and although getting a well worked goal 24 minutes into the game from on loan Limerick man Jason Hughes, they reverted back to defensive mode for the nervous last 66 minutes!

As usual, the worst thing Athlone can ever do is take the initial lead as they seem to put themselves under pressure instead of going in for the kill, and so it came to pass that the other Shannonsiders went into a 2-1 lead. Austin Skelly equalised on the 70 minute mark but less than 10 minutes later Stephen O’Flynn netted his 2nd of the game to give all 3 points to Limerick.

Only other point of note was an apparent pre kick off spat between Brendan Place and Pat Scully with an apparent reference to the former using bully boy tactics on young players! Make of that what you will!
