Athlone Earn Share Of The Spoils

Thursday 29th July 2010, Airtricity League Division 1
Athlone Town 1-1 Waterford United

Thursdays Town match against Waterford was always going to be a test … not only for the players but for myself as well. Having had the chance to head to Tallaght to photograph Shamrock Rovers v Juventus I finally made the decision to keep it local and head to The Wollen in the vague hope that things could get better!

And get better they did! Despite the notable absence of the manager in the technical area, and Waterford having the majority of possession, Athlone battled hard and to a man gave their all.

Things looked to be going the usual way when 53 minutes into the tough encounter Waterford got on the score sheet … much to the delight of “Audrey” who had the Golden Goal 😉

But rather than let the heads drop Town ploughed away and got their reward when a corner cut through defenders and attackers a like to drop at the feet of Paddy Collins at the back post. Collins drew back the trigger and fired home the equaliser.

Athlone can count themselves unlucky not to get more out of it with the all to usual inept refereeing denying 2 stonewall penalties. But c’est la vie, incompetent refereeing and Lissywollen seem to go hand in hand with each other so we’ll take the point!
