Town Restore Some Pride
Tues 4th May 2010 – Airtricity League Division 1
Waterford United 0-0 Atlhone Town. Waterford RSC
After Fridays shambolic performance, optimism was at an all time low for a midweek trip to the “Sunny South East” against Waterford United.
The Blue so far this season have been described as everything from the LoI Chelsea to the LoI Brazil (not The Blue Brazil mind!) but to be honest, maybe it was just Towns spirited performance but, they didnt look all that special. Athlone to their credit went out and played the exact opposite of their previous outing and went a long way to restoring some pride in the jersey. While George O’Callaghan tried a few fancy flicks, almost for the sake of it, Robbie Benson executed some simple looking twists and turns to leave Waterford players almost running into each other. Chris Bennion again put in a top class performance, the like of which Town fans havent seen since Danny O’Leary and before that Shane Curran on a good day! Gordon Watson put in 90 minutes that would have astounded Town fans had there been more than 10 there to witness it, with the former Greystones striker almost put the icing on the cake with a stooping header that was deflected onto the post. Stephen Caffrey moved back into the middle of the park with great effect while Brian McCarthy gets better with every game.
Niall Scullion came on as a sub and put in his usualy hard fought performance, the same can be said for Stephen Place who ran himself into the ground and James Goggins got his 2nd run out for The Town, looking lively.
And so it ended honours even, a point in the bag and a good performance to boot!

Not what you would call an accurate match report .
Athlone went to the RSC for a draw .
Blues forwards ran riot of the Athlone goal ,if it was not for the keeper Athlone would have been in serious trouble.
Blues were very poor up front when it came to taking their chances .
Crazy ref decisions ,and 11 men behind the ball was always going to lead to a dull nil all draw
Hi Mark,
Thanks for checking out my blog. Its not supposed to be a match report, it’s just an assessment of Athlones performance, which in my opinion is fairly accurate. They played with a lot more heart, passion and pride than their last outing. Benno had a fantastic game, as did Robbie Benson. From talking to supporters of other teams, Waterford were being made out to be World beaters and we were little more than canon fodder for them.
