Drom And Dusted

Airtricity League, Saturday 6th March 2010, Drom
Salthill Devon 0-1 Athlone Town

A winning start to the 2010 League of Ireland season for Athlone but it was hardly in the convincing manner Town fans would have liked.
A 10th minute strike my Austin Skelly was just about enough to steal all 3 points for Athlone and despite having several chances to increase their lead, Athlone failed to capitalise on them. Most notable when the lively winger Richie O’Hanlon, with the Salthill keeper barely off his line, tried an audacious chip when Robbie Farrell stood alone about 10 yards from the goal.

Salthill had their chances too with Shane Brownes shot smacking off the crossbar in the closing minutes. The home side were even too honest for their own good with several runs through on goal, where more experienced strikers might have went down under the pressure of minimal contact, the front man stayed on his feet and the chances went begging!

At the end of the day 3 points is 3 points, and a clean sheet to boot … but Town fans in attendance were not left overly excited about the performance!
Early days though so we’ll see what the 1st home game of the season brings next weekend
