Who Let The Drogs Out!

Drogheda united 1-1 Athlone Town
With preseason coming to an end, Athlone travelled to United Park to take on a Drogheda side who managed to creap in through a crack in the Premier Division door. With that, 3 and a half men set off on the trip. Ditching the SatNav we decided to wing it … all was going well until the “short cut” around Mullingar which allowed us to visit mythical places like Fore and Crookedwood! There was a unanimous vote to take the motorway on the way home!
Athlone had a strong side out with Brian McCarthy making his 2nd debut for the Town. Robbie Farrell and newly re-signed Noel McGee battled up front while the midfield quartet of Tom O’Halloran, Gareth Kenna, Kevin Quinn and Richie O’Hanlon put in very good performances. Chris Bennion also performed some heroics. With Drogs having 1 off the bar, another off the post and a shot cleared off the line it wasnt all 1 way traffic with Athlone missing an early peno, O’Hanlon had a shot rebound off the post and numerous other chances falling to the front men. Drogheda eventually went 1 up when a bit of defensive fanning about left Bennion unprotected, but after a raft of substitutions Shane Dolan persevered to capitalise on a goalkeeping error to calmly slot the ball home from the edge of the box.
